A simple checklist for choosing a laptop
Memory, storage, battery and the details people forget until after they buy.
Decide what you will do with it
Web browsing, documents and video calls need much less than video editing or gaming. Write down your heaviest regular task, and look for what the maker or trusted reviewers recommend for it.
Memory and storage
Memory (RAM) affects how many things run smoothly at once. Storage affects how many files you can keep. On many laptops memory cannot be upgraded later, so check whether it is soldered before you buy.
Battery life and charging
Battery claims depend on how the maker tested them. Look for independent tests that describe the kind of use. Check whether the laptop charges over USB-C, which is handy when you travel.
Screen and keyboard
You will look at the screen and type on the keyboard every day. Check the screen brightness, resolution and size, and read how people describe the keyboard and trackpad.
Ports, weight and support
List the ports you use, such as USB-A, HDMI or an SD card reader, and whether you will need an adapter. Check the weight if you carry it daily. Look at the length of the warranty and how repairs work.
